MD1200 + H800 w/4 disks to

Someone of experience with 3 or 4 TB of disk in a w MD1200 / H800?  Looking at the documentation (ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md1200_Reference%20Guide_en-us.pdf) it looks like 2 TB drives are the largest 'supported '.  The MD1200 will recognize all the training of 3 3/4 to / 4TB?

Thanks for all your comments!

The MD1200 is just a disk enclosure. He cares about the size of the disk.

The question should be; the PERC H800 supports 3/4 disks to. The answer to that is that it supports (Enterprise class) drives greater than 2 TB (Dell sells the combo).

Obviously; do not use discs office class in a configuration like this.

I am able to mirror 9 virtual disks but when I select my 9th virtual to the mirror, no drives appear as available. Hi Joey

I just tried OMCleanup and reinstalled 7.4.  He exhibited the same symptoms showing is not the physical drives in the H800.  I can't find a download 7.2 but would be willing to try the previous versions.  A previous version of OM worked with the same controllers / speakers / computer, but I do not remember the version where I improved.  (I am an individual shop and am not very informed when it comes to managing open, its versions and how to install/uninstall).

I can still kill the DSM SA connection Service by running a foolish occupation for the H800 report.  The report H700 works fine.

  • Connect a Powervault MD1200 to a PowerEdge R710 5.1 running esx using SAS cables

    Hello

    I bought a Powervault md1200 and a perc h800 controller.

I'll install the perc controller in my PowerEdge r710 5.1 running esx server.

Then connect the md1200 to the r710 via sas cables. The powervault is no NIC.

My question is, how to configure the RAID while booting the r710? I understand that if I were on Windows, I could use open manage but I'm not familiar with how to do this from a 5.1 esx server.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Thank you

    Flynn

    Hello Flynn,

What you need to do is to go into the Bios of your H800 controller and you can then configure your virtual disk MD1200.  Once you have the virtual disk created, then you will be able to do a scan in ESX & he should see the virtual disk that are created.  To access the boot controller bios you need to hit Ctrl + C to enter the bios.

  • RAID works using MD1200 r.620 and 6 GB/s SAS HBA?

We have a r.620 with Dell SAS HBA already in which is attached to a tape of 124 t library.

Just got a MD1200 and I plugged in the other port on the SAS HBA.  I can see the drives in Windows Disk Manager.  I can also see Open Manage, but there is no option to use RAID functions or create virtual discs.  Should there be?

In fact, OpenManage said "Connector 0 (no RAID)" with regard to the SAS 6 GB/s HBA.   I searched online for drivers for this card that allow RAID and can not find.  Am, I watered?   How the RAID to work on the MD1200?

    Hello wardog25,

For the MD1200 you use a PERC card because it will allow that you create a raid array. The SAS 6hba that is used for your 124 t isn't a raid card, so you will not be able to create a raid on this map. For a MD1200, we recommend that you use a PERC H800. Here is a link to the Guide of interoperability for the MD1200 & if you look at page 2, it lists the supported raid controllers. FTP://FTP.Dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/PowerVault-md1200_Reference%20Guide_en-us.PDF

Here is a link to buy a PERC H800 if you need.

  • Add MD1200 to PE R420

I need to add more storage to a PE R420. I use this server to the other servers, Arcserve Backup. Additional storage would mainly for backup storage a process of disk to disk-to-tape.

I am considering using a combination of MD1200/PERC H800 with (6) discs Nearline SAS 4 TB in a RAID 10 configuration.

On the road, when I need to add capacity by adding additional disks to the MD1200, what are my options? Let's say I have add more drives 4 TB (4). I would be able to complete this capacity RAID 10 existing and add to the existing volumes or create new volumes, or should I create a 2nd RAID 10 with one or more separate volumes?

    Thank you.

A correction to the post of Sam. In accordance with the manual of PERC H810 (you have a 12th generation PowerEdge, PERC is you would like to get to a MD1200/1220) on page 18, you cannot reconfigure a set of split volumes raid (raid 10, 50 and 60).

    downloads.Dell.com/.../PowerEdge-RC-h310_User%27s%20Guide_en-US.pdf

If you will not be able to expand a raid 10. Only raid 0 (cannot be used for production data), 5 and 6 can be changed to grow.

The PERC H800 had the same limitations.

  • Can I extend my MD1200 RAID6 configuration?

    Hi all

I have a PERC H800 and MD1200 RAID6 would be on a PE on Windows Server 2008 R2 x 64 2970.  Currently I have 8 disks SAS of 2 TB, but 4 locations open and would like to extend.  Is it as simple as the addition of 4 disks? After saving the data, of course...  Any help appreciated.

You will need to do is install Open Server to manage the server administrator. Which may require a reboot. Then put the new HDD and inside the OMSA you can go to the virtual disk and select this option to reconfigure. It will allow you to select the new drives to add to the VFD. Once this process is complete, you will need to use a utility such as diskpart to actually extend partition on windows. Also, as you mentioned, it is essential to ensure that you make a backup prior to this process, just to be sure. Please let me know if you have other questions I would be happy to help you.

  • Can MD1000 and MD1200 coexist nicely on a PERC6e?

Hi, I have a PE2950 with windows 2008r2 with a PERC6/e controller with two external ports.  One of the ports is attached to a MD1000 disk array.  I need more storage and I'm looking to get a MD1200.  Can I attach the external port on the PERC6e one Bay MD1200 discs?  Suggestions?

    Thank you!

    -sul.

    Sul26,

Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to put the two of those paintings on a Perc 6 controller. The reason is that the MD1200 is a SAS 6 GB table and the MD1000 is an array of 3 GB and the connectors are completely different. You need a Perc H800 controller for the MD1200.

-J' tried with two pools and groups.

-Out-of-band management stations have been Windows 7 and 8.1

  • MD1200 unified mode with 2 systems - shared volume

Does anyone know how to run a MD1200 table in unified with a volume shared between 2 physical systems? The goal is to access the table with 2 different systems with each system see the changes on the other.

I know it was not necessarily designed for this, but I thought I heard someone say it could be done.

    Any ideas on that?

    Hello StreaqS,

The only way to make your configuration & change your stay intact data, no corruption is to put both physical systems in a cluster. Without having a cluster in place as soon as you connect the second physical host to the virtual disk, it will corrupt your data.

  • MD1120 with PERC H800

    Hello

I have a R710 with a unused H800 controller in it. I would hang a few of MD1120 turned off the server, but there is no information of compatibility for this combination.

The H800 documentation claims that it is backward compatible with / 3 Gb/s, but don't not specify clearly he will work with the MD1120. I guess I would need to get a cable SFF-8470 SAS SFF-8088 just to connect.

But before we go through all of this on a production server, I wish I had an idea of if it would work.

Any guidance is the most appreciated!

    -Tom

It is not a supported configuration (only the MD1200/MD1220 are officially supported on the H800), but I suspect it would work very well.

Indeed, you would need to look for a suitable cable. Dell will probably not sell this cable as it is not necessary for the supported configurations, but there are many other providers that will probably sell it.

  • Add existing MD1220 MD1200

Hi, I have MD1220 in place and I would like to add MD1200. Is that possible or it must be MD1220? Thank you...

You can add a daisy chain out of a MD1220 MD1200. Depending on your raid controller, you can make this hot (on-the-fly). With the PERC H800 or H810, you can add it on the fly. If you use a non Dell raid controller, you can add it without doubt on the fly, but it's something you want to check with the manufacturer of raid controller.

If your MD1220 is fixed on a storage type MD3200 SAN solution, you may need to anticipate downtime to add a new box.

  • Replace the drive failed in md1200

    Hello

I have a drive failing in my md1200. He was part of a redundant virtual disk (raid5) with a hot spare. The virtual drive has been rebuilt with the replacement immediately and shows green. The failed drive flashes orange in the md1200. There is no option to take the disk offline in OpenManage 7.4, just blink/unblink drive. I expect a replacement drive tomorrow. The manual gives me two steps in replacing a drive in the scenario above, the first is:

    1. remove the defective drive. (!)

Can I simply press the release button and remove the disc out while the leds are flashing orange? Or should I do something else? The cli utility details an order to prepare a disk for removal, but gives no further explanation...

    Pointers would be useful

    Thank you

    Hello davetoo2,

You can just pull the defective drive off the MD1200 & then once your replacement drive arrived you can insert it into the empty location since your spare disk drive is successfully completed reconstruction. The reader should have turned off once that the MD1200 he marked as failed, but I've seen this happen several times & pulling the reader should not harm your drive virtual raid 5.

  • NX3100 and MD1200s with SSDS / SAS - Cachecade activation

Have inherited a NX3100 and two MD1200 with four 149 GB SSD and the twenty 600 GB 15 k SAS drives.

I was not able to allow Cachecade as well as PERC H800 in the NX3100 is only a backup to battery 512 MB of memory.

    My questions are:

The PERC H800 can be improved by installing the module 1 GB NV and the necessary firmware?

Will be available to upgrade if I have to buy a new PERC H800 NV Cachecade 2.0 that allows write RAM 1 GB with Cachecade (1.0) already in the firmware?

The PERC H810 there already Cachecade version 2?  If so, will it work in a Dell 510 Server?

It would not be supported by Dell, but would not void the warranty. However, if you have problems with the MD1200, support may require you to remove the H800 and let them test the installation with that.

  • Need more disk space to run virtual machines on R710 server with no available drive slots

    Hello

We have a server R710 with five $2.5 146 each and three 600 GB SCSI disks SCSI.  We have no more slots.

We want another 2-4 TB of space.   This server is used to run virtual machines to test software applications.  We have need for decent speed, but more important still need a cost-effective solution for running virtual machines.

The budget would be in the $1000 range give or take.  I might be able to get $3000, but a $10,000 would be too.  We could consider removing disks from 146 GB 5 and replacing them with those larger, but that might not be the first choice.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you!

What you ask for is really difficult to do within the budget without sacrificing important performance (from what you have right now in performance).

Any external storage solution (Dell) is out of the question for $3 k (think MD1200/1220).

    The market, 2.5 "drives max out at 1 TB at 7200 RPM, 900 tr/10 k or 300 GB @ 15 k RPM.

Dell has disks 1 to 7200 RPM 2.5 "company (for PowerEdges) for ~ $440 (see here). These are not the best choice if you want any kind of good performance.

You might look into upgrading to 900GB 10 k rpm drives. These run $799 each today on the Dell website (see here).

If you replace one of the 146 both each and let rebuild you could then use the extra space to another virtual disk. This would give about 2800GB.

If you can't budget 5 of them, according to the current setup of raid, you can watch a backup and restore of the virtual disk of some 146.

    You could:

-use 2 of the existing 146 in raid 1 for operating system and the extra space

    -use 3 x 900 in raid 5 (which would give a crude 1800 (Go so ~ 1674 usable))

-Use the 3 600 existing RAID 5 (which would give ~ 1116 GB usable)

  • Reference Dell MD1200, H710 with R720XD

    Hello

Asked if drieves NL - Seagate SAS (ST4000NM0023) can be used in the following configuration.

    Reference Dell Perc H710 + PowerEdge R720XD MD1200.

The answer that I gave them was who should be tested. Because in documentation it is stated that mark Dell hard disks should be used.

I know that some controllers Perc will give a warning each time if not dell disks are used, but they work without problems. Is this the case even when you use a box MD1200?

    Kind regards

    Indrek

    INDRP,

You're right that only some drives are tested and supported in the bays of the MD. Here is a link that will take you to one of the manuals that list all drives supported for 1200 MD and MD1220.
