Migration between different processor types in a HA cluster
Hi all
I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I spoke to two different people, versed in VMWare and get two different answers. So, here, any help would be greatly appreciated. As it is, we have an our main cluster HA for 3 x servers IBM 3650 with the 1.86 Ghz processors dual core quad. Is it not possible to add another x 3650 to this cluster even though she had a high end processor (say dual 3.2 Ghz Quad-core), or would this cause problems with the vMotion treat and spoil the HA features? I heard say Yes and no. I read somewhere that this will be a non-issue, if you will run six to eight new core Intel processors in the same cluster HA, but won't work with the previous generation processors.
I guess if I put 'new' server in a separate cluster and storage-vMotioned turn off the old cluster to the new it works very well.
We are currently running VMWare vCenter 2.5 U3 & ESX 3.5 U3.
Anyway, thanks in advance!
-John
VMotion and HA are 2 different things. HA less than requirements that VMotion since HA restarts vms of power off of the State, in contrast to vmotion. Both virtual machines can be supplied on any host in the cluster HA will work fine.

vMotion between different processors
On my last job, I had two clusters vmware, using four hosts with HP DL580 servers and the other with two hosts in a HP BLADE system, I don't remember the model.
So when I tried to move an active VM for clusters to each other, I got an error, so I'm looking here on community and I got the awnser is the reason the hosts had different processors and I can only move this virtual machine, if they are closed. If I can only move cold VM between my cluster.
OK im on a new company name and they had M$ Hyper-V and now we are migrating to VMWARE (cool ) we have two DELL Poweredge servers, one with two Quad-Core Xeon X 5470 and the other with two Xeon Quad - Core E5320.
So I guess I'm having a problem of fact a vmotion hot between it because the servers have different processors.
So im buying new processors, but I find only Xeon Quad-Core X 5365, I think that it corresponds to that of the X 5470 but with cache and diferrent clock.
My ask is, can I do a hot Vmotion with some VM of a Xeon X 5470 server on a Xeon X 5365 server.
Stability of Slackware, safety and simplicity are the best choice!
Yes,
the vmotion VMs between different generations of cpu is only posible to put these hosts using Enhanced VMotion (CVS).
Improved compatibility for VMotion (EVC) simplifies VMotion compatibility issues
through the generations of CPU. EVC automatically configures the server with Intel CPU
FlexMigration or AMD - V extended Migration technologies
compatible with the old servers. After EVC is enabled for a cluster in the
VirtualCenter inventory, all hosts in this cluster are configured to
present identical CPU features and compatibility for VMotion CPU. The
features introduced by each host are determined by selecting a predefined EVC
base line. VirtualCenter does not allow the addition of hosts that cannot be
automatically configured to be compatible with EVC baseline.
To use CVS, you must run ESX Server 3.5 Update 2 or
highest with Virtual Center 2.5 Update 2 or higher and have only compatible CPUs
are listed in one of the following tables.
CVS does not allow for migration with VMotion between Intel and AMD processors.*
VCA makes it much
easier to add servers with the new generation of processors in existing clusters
containing a material more former generation. Entering an EVC cluster servers are
automatically configured to be compatible with the hosts already in the
clusters. Since this process is automatic, EVC is very simple to use and
requires no expertise on CPU features and masks.

VMotion between 2 Hosts with different processors
Hallo,
I have a server in my homelab I use for studies of VMsphere and I want to get a second machine to test advanced features such as HA, Vmotion etc.
My first server has a map of X9SCM-9 with processor Xeon E3-1230V2 (Ivy Bridge). I am currently running ESX 5.0 U2 on it.
I was counting on obtaining of material quality for the second host consumers because I don't want to spend a lot on it, so I thought that I need any CPU generation Ivy Bridge.
I tested today with a second machine with a Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge, but when I try to Vmotion he says "the virtual machine requires physical features that are not available or disabled on the host... ».
So I figure there must be a difference in architecture regardless of the CPU beeing an Ivy Bridge CPU.
When I try to activate CVS it just me are going to the 'Nehalem' Version so my virtual machines running on host 1 would not be able to use all the features of the CPU since the Xeon.
So the question boils down to: what is the processor less which offer compatibility VCA L5?
Or is there something else to consider in VMotion between two hosts with different processors?
I got a shared storage, etc. of the same network configuration.
Thank you
Benjamin
Hi Benjamin,
For compatibility VCA L5 want to look at one of the following models, Intel CPU:
- Ivy Bridge: Series E3-1200-v2
- HASWELL
I would recommend mental health that before rushing and a CPU purchase, check if a cheaper option would be, as Jon mentions in suppresss some fo the CPU compatibility checks so obviously, this is not desirable in a production environment, and must be applied in your study of VMware Lab to the home address.
Hope this helps,
Simon

problems of migration between 4.0 and 4.1 and vpshere different server platforms
I'm having a problem with my migration between vsphere 4.0 and 4.1. to complicate matters, we are also migrating server chassis. The migration of chassis is made for FT. We discovered when planning for FT consultants, we used initially to configure the cluster FT, specified servers and chipsets that were not capable of FT. They were Intel Xeon 53xx series. I use the PowerEdge 2950 servers, those with the xeon 53xx was Gen2 and I am replacing them with PE 2950 Gen3 with proc Xeon 5430
The problem, I'm running is now that I put in place a PE 2950 Gen3 in the cluster, I cannot vmotion for her. Whenever I do, I get the following error:
Host CPU is not compatible with the requirements of the virtual machine to CPUID level 0 x 1 'ecx' register
Bits of host: 0000:0000:0000:1000:0010:0000:0001
required: x 000: x 0 0x0x:00: 0xx0:xx10:xx1x:xxxx:xx01
Inconsistency detected for these features:
* SSE4.1
If possible, use a cluster with Enhanced Vmotion compatibility (EVC) enable: see article of the 1003212. In the absence of EVC, see 1993.
the thing is that I can't seem to activate CVS as options I selected do not include processors that I have in my servers. all processor options don't list any of my processors.
I tried seting the mask CPUID 1 VM and migration, which worked, but is completely unrealistic, because I have to stop every VM to do and some systems that need to migrate are essential. I tried setting the mask corresponding CPUID at the host level and who does not at all. I must have missed something simple or fell on a rather massive bug!
help please!
Then I suggest VCA as this will take care of him for you.
If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful! Thank you!

VSphere/ESXi can run on different processor architecture?
We want to implement VMware infrastructure and research in the vSphere purchase Ess. 'More'. We are not implement shared storage. We will have 3 ESXi host total.
I want to save money as much as possible. I have a HP Proliant DL380p Gen8 and a DL385 G7 servers. By HP, both are compatible with ESXi 6.0. I would use these two servers and have to buy a server.
The DL380p is the DL385 AMD and Intel. If this configuration can work or this server must be Intel?
Thank you
Alex
We absolutely want to use vMotion. Can be used without storage shared, correct?
Yes, it is possible since the 5.1, but there are a few things to keep in mind. It's basically a combination of storage vMotion, transferring the VM disks from one storage to another and a regular vMotion device, transfer a live VM running from the memory of one host to another.
As such it is nowhere as dynamic as a normal vMotion alone, since the copy of VM disk data can take some time. There is also no support DRS.
You can read about some more here: http://wahlnetwork.com/2012/11/21/leveraging-vmwares-enhanced-shared-nothing-vmotion/
Must the CPU be the same model? For example, should all have Intel Xeon E5 2609 v2 CPU?
No, the basic requirement for transfer a live OS running, it's that both source and destination host supports the same CPU instruction sets. Exact model, clock speed Mhz cache, dimensions, etc. are not relevant as long as the CPU instruction sets are identical. So no, they do not have to be the exact same model.
In addition, you can enable Enhanced vMotion compatibility (EVC) on a cluster of servers with the same CPU provider, which allows you to establish the lowest common denominator of a generation of CPU between different hosts. For example, the Xeon E5 2609 v2 you mentioned is a generation Ivy Bridge CPU. If you add a generation Sandy Bridge Xeon you define the EVC to Sandy Bridge mode, as it is the older generation in your cluster and containing all common instructions sets that are also found in the home of Ivy Bridge of latest generation. If you add a
host with Haswell generation CPU, you would set the EVC at Ivy Bridge mode respectively.
VCA will hide the new instructions to virtual machines to ensure that they can be migrated directly to all guests.
You have to keep AMD out of your cluster host, but that's not really make a difference in your case since vMotion work never between AMD and Intel, and that you can not use VMware HA because you are devoid of shared storage. Just be aware that VM on the host AMD will never be able to migrate to other hosts without interruption of service through enhanced vMotion.

Any difference between these 2 types of installation of Windows?
Hello, I usually install Windows 7 or 8 with DVD. (start)
but, when I realized that I can just install Windows 7 or 8 my hard drive (I have 2 dosks: C and D.) course, I start installation of disk D because C is the system)Just run the installer and it works fine, so I no longer need DVD disc. of course after the direct installation I remove the "old windows" folder with disk cleanup. So, I have a question. Is there a difference between these 2 types of installation of Windows? I remove the old windows, but this facility still leaves some unnessesery files? What kind is best?Thank youWell, you can always copy the install on D:\ files and run Setup from there.
Running Setup in vs on local drive (USB or DVD) media is not very different. Running from local drive will of course be much faster since it is read directly from the hard drive. To install from a USB key, download Windows 8 Web Installer and create your own:

Live migration between servers Intel Xeon E5410 and Intel Xeon E5506?
Hello.
Is it possible to run the dynamic migration between servers Intel Xeon E5410 and Intel Xeon E5506 processor?
Both servers are running ESX 4.0
Try to migrate will cause an error as UC and hostbitys do not match.
I; m impossible and VCA (like a Core2 family and another family of Core i7).
I don't mind to give up a part of the 'new feature' the Core i7.
Thank you
Zeevik.
> I; m impossible and VCA (like a Core2 family and another family of Core i7).
You must turn off all the virtual machines on the host with 55xx Xeons before turning on the VCA.

All the help instructions are to import and export bookmarks bookmarks between different brands of browsers.
Assuming that each of these different users use a different profile of Firefox. You can use the built in Fx4 Sync feature. Click on Setup Sync in the menu selections, create an account and then have each user created their profile to use this new account synchronization. It syncs more bookmarks; things like history, passwords, etc. So if it's only the bookmarks you are concerned with that, use customize only synchronize bookmarks when you set up each user. Good luck and have fun in sync.

Windows displays different processor on my Satellite M115-S3144
I just bought a Toshiba Satellite M115 - S3144:
http://www.toshibadirect.com/TD/B2C/pdet.to?SEG=HHO&poid=351572
http://www.circuitcity.com/SSM/Toshiba-Satellite-14-1-widescreen-notebook-PC-M115-S3144/SEM/RPSM/OID/160477/catOid/-12963/rpem/CCD/ProductDetail.doand everywhere where I look it says that it is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 1 .6GHz.
My question:
Why Windows tells me I have a T5500 1 .66GHz processor?Hello
As far as I know as much Toshiba portable computers come with different hardware configurations. I think that, probably, this series of laptop also was delivered with different processors.
Where have you checked CPU properties in windows?
I put t know why Windows shows you this information on the CPU. Perhaps this CPU was installed in the laptop.
I think that if you want to be 100% sure of CPU or other hardware specifications, you can use the diagnostic software freeware like Everest. -
Satellite P200 1 FT: different processors in the hardware Manager
In Device Manager, there are two different processors (T7300 2.0 + T7500 2.2) listed. I thought that there must be two of the with each 2.2 GHZ T7500? !!
This is nothing unusual ;) I read that it is a matter of Vista and it can be solved very easily!
You must go to the Device Manager and remove the CPU entry in the Device Manager list.
Reboot the laptop. After restarting again the Vista will reinstall the drivers and update the CPU entry in Device Manager
After this short intervention, both processors should be recognized correctly.
Best regards

Why Vista offers two different processors in my A200 SP?
Hello world.
I m new here but have a very important question for my new laptop that I just bought. OK here goes if someone can help?
Just bought my new Satellite Pro A200GE - 26 Q Intel centrino computer core 2 duo t7500 2.2 ghz, which came with 2 GB of RAM that I ve already upgraded to 4 GB of RAM, immediately and wow it's such a beautiful machine tosh laptop computers great build!
The problem I have is that when I go into Device Manager and processor link, it shows the two processors, one a T7300 @2. 0 ghz and a @2 T7500. 2 GHz... now I know the speed may be slowed down due to the power save etc, but surely, it should show BOTH seek the SAME IE [email protected] and [email protected] instead of the T7300 above @2. 0 ghz.
Have I sold a laptop with wrong / different processors in? Maybe by mistake and one another thing is RAM shows 3070MB (3 GB) and I know that some systems use the rest but I thought that vista home premium was supposed to show this... I am not upgrading to vista x 64 will make the best use of it, but as I read on many forums when you run on x 64, you have a lot of driver problems and the hassle is not worth. So please help me with this problem of processor.
Can I get a pair? Thanks again.

Device Manager shows two different processors on Satellite P200 - 1 K 9
Hello
I just bought P200 - 1 K 9 and spotted (Vista 32-bit) Device Manager shows two different processors under the section of processors:Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.40 GHz CPUI expected to see the two excatly the same processors here.
Vista recognizes in general CPU core 2 duo 2.4 GHz, BIOS too.
What is on the Device Manager? Is there something wrong with the CPU? Should I return it better?
Would you please check your processor in Device Manager (start-> right click on computer-> select Properties-> Device Manager) and let me know what you have?I'll start some live linux CD and check there too.
Thank you
MiroslawHi mate,
the you´ve got problem is not a problem. It s just a simple bug in the Vista Device Manager and hardware abstraction layer.
Follow these steps:
Remove the CPU from the Device Manager (uninstall just like any other device) and then restart windows. The processor will be indicated correctly next time you reboot the system.Welcome them

Script for random switch between different waveforms
Hello.
How correctly to write the script to switch between different waveforms when generating?
For example:
We use the niFgen allocate named Waveform VI to allocate three waveforms. When you run the generator, the first forms of wave of work. Then the generator is activated and used in the following waveforms only second and third.Or, we have configured 10 waveformsand by train to spend no fixed cyclically between everyone, but only between 2 and 5 waveforms.
If it is possible to achieve?
Max O.
Developer of software and engineering,
TeSLa.
Hi Max,.
Each stage needs, too. End ifs should take place at the end. For example:
If scriptTrigger0
generate a myWfm0
on the other
If scriptTrigger1
generate a myWfm1
on the other
If scriptTrigger2
generate a myWfm2
on the other
/ etc...
end if
end if
end ifOf course, it must all be encapsulated in a repeated structure to continue checking for triggers.
Kind regards
