  If I pass on my old Satellite S1800-814, it seems to start correctly: it shows the symbol of "Toshiba", then "Windows XP loading", then the screen goes completely blank, followed by a black screen showing the cursor that I am able to move.   Turn the laptop over and unscrew the cover on the ram. Then remove the ram and try to turn it on again. If it lights, put the piston inside the laptop and try again. It does not turn on?   Hope you can help. We have a 5 years satellite pro L20 who never gave a lot of days. It runs from Win XP, had an upgrade (crucial) memory to 2 GB and a new battery 4 years ago 4 years ago. 2 days ago, he simply left with the same noise you get when force a shutdown by holding the power button down.   I would really appreciate the help. I own a satellite 1800-712. I have receently bought a usb external hard drive for some extra memory (IE Toshiba MK4026GAX USB Device)

  When I connect it to my usb port it records any with the computer. The green light so there is power to the hard drive. The usb ports recognized of other fine features (a modem and memory stick)

  I tried the external hard drive on a desktop pc and it works fine.

  I have downloaded all windows xp service pack updates and updated my bios. Don't know what to do now.
