Hello Sasinduprabhashwara,
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.
Because you want to upgrade to 8.1 Windows 8 Windows, keep your personal files and your applications, you can still perform this upgrade using Microsoft Store. You can check out the article below and upgrade to 8.1 Windows 8 Windows.
Update to Windows 8.1 of Windows 8
If you do not always go through Microsoft Store, you can switch to Windows 8.1 using the DVD of Windows 8.1.
- Turn on your PC so that Windows starts normally, insert the DVD, and then shut down your PC.
Restart your PC and press any key to boot from the DVD.
If you restart your PC, and your current version of Windows starts, you may need to open a start menu or change the boot order in your BIOS or UEFI settings PC so that your PC starts in the media. To open a boot menu or change the boot order, you usually have to press a combination of keys (by example, F2, F12, DELETE, Esc, etc.) immediately after you turn on your PC. For instructions on changing the boot order to your PC, see the documentation that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's Web site.
If your current version of Windows Start, try again on hold until Windows asks you to sign, in the shutdown completely, and then restart your PC.
On the Install Windows page, enter your language and other preferences and then press or click Next.
Tap or click Install Windows.
On the page, enter the product key to activate Windows , enter your product key.
(The product key should be on the box of the DVD 8.1 Windows provided, or in a purchase confirmation email. It looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.)
On the page Please read the terms of the license , if you accept the terms of the license, tap or click I accept the terms of the licenseand then press or click Next.
On the which type of installation you want? the page, tap or click on update.
Follow the instructions to complete the installation of Windows 8.1.
Important: Change BIOS / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.
Hope this information is useful. Please feel free to answer in the case where you are facing in the future other problems with Windows.
Thank you.

Change the path to the updates from microsoft updates vs. windows
Fully updated, xp pro, ie8
When you click Start, all programs, windows update, go to the updates of microsoft with the compatibility view
which connection online for microsoft updates gets updates microsoft without compatibility view
can I change the path for my start, all programs, windows updates to be updated from microsoft without view compatibiliy?
Edit: have reinstalled os with a sp3 slipstreamed cd.
Edit2: no sites are not listed in my compatibility view settings.
There is no need to uninstall/reinstall MSE.
1. open IE (only!) to Microsoft Update . Click change settings in the left pane. Scroll to the bottom of the page. To stop using Microsoft Update. Disable the Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).
1B. Reboot for good measure.
2. your shortcut on the start menu should now be updated to Windows . [1] use it (not the Tools menu pull-down option) to go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate. Assuming that it does NOT open in compatibility mode...
3. "Flip" your source of default update appropriate Microsoft update by clicking on the option / link on the main page of Windows Update (IIRC).
3B. reboot for good measure & test to see if the Microsoft Update shortcut on your Start menu will however open IE8 in compatibility view.
PS: I don't have a WinXP box handy to test myself, but the last time I used the Microsoft Update shortcut on one of my client computers, it has not opened in compatibility view. As far as I know, MS may have changed something since then so YMMV.
=============================================================
[1] If you persevere with Windows Update as a source of update by default, MSE will always be 'auto-update' [even thought that Windows Update will offer more optional updates Defs] but will offer no updates to the ESM (e.g. new versions MSE) program or updates for MS Office, Silverlight, or Skype . -

Note: you will lose data and applications and you may need to reinstall the applications. Be sure to back up data that you want to keep before you begin.
Note: there are two options to choose during the installation process of Windows 7:
Upgrade. This option replaces your current version of Windows with Windows 7 and keep your files, settings and programs on your computer.
Custom. This option replaces your current version of Windows with Windows 7, but does not keep your files, settings and programs. It is sometimes referred to as a new installation for this reason.
Note: to eject the DVD
You may need to press button on the front of the disk to eject -
I've updated three of my computers from Windows XP Professional for Window 7 Professional using kits of DVD I bought. I have three sets of Window 7 professional DVD in my possession. I bought a new license [facility provided by Microsoft key] for my ThinkPad. I ordered also accompanying the DVD, which I imagine will happen next week. Rather than wait for the DVD, can I use one of my existing 32 Bit Windows DVD for installation to upgrade with the new license key that I got from Microsoft?
No problem - but you might want to wait, if your existing DVD is the original version, because a new will have SP1 integrated, so it'll even some hassles :)

It's more for info, but it would be great if MS past this info to their developers so that the Windows broken for KB976884 update package can be fixed.
Newspapers MSI mentioned above show the following error information, all related to being too restrictive registry permissions. Perhaps the restrictive registry permissions are design due to the product; in which case the update package must be fixed.
Here are the logs in order, that they do not have:

Resolve open Regedit and search on the first GUID after components. The full registry path you are looking for is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-1-5-18\Components\.
Don't find the GUID "00002119E20000000000000000F01FEC" as there are hundreds of entries and you will be forever.
For example, in find point 5 '6F949E36CB3004C50AF18C3B9B1A1EE8' you will see that the key has void key and one of these sub keys will be '00002119E20000000000000000F01FEC '. When you select '00002119E20000000000000000F01FEC' you will see you get "access denied".
First STEP: right-click on the "00002119E20000000000000000F01FEC" subkey and select "permissions". Windows will tell you that you can view this subkey. Click on the "Advanced" button and click the group to select the 'administrators' tab 'Property' under ' to a change in ownership: "& check the 'Replace owner of subcontainers and objects' option click on 'APPLY '. If you click on 'OK', you will get access denied.
STEP 2: select the "permissions" tab and make sure that both the "Include permissions can be inherited from parents of the object" & "Replace all permissions of child object with permissions inheritable from this object" options are checked. Click 'APPLY '. Do not click on 'OK' you will get "Access denied" yet
Repeat the steps for each GUID registry and then try and install the update via Windows Update.
Whenever you see an error in the update Windowsw it generates an error log and stores it in the Temp of Windows folder, normally located in C:\Windows\Temp. Sort by date to get the last newspaper at the top.
The error logs are normally preceded by MSI in the form MSIxxxxx.LOG.
I hope this works if you can not get rid of this error, but I would have preferred that ms fixed properly!
Good luck
See you soon
Pete

Cannot use the WIndows updates in Windows XP
Original title: re-installed windows XP Home Edition and the service packs, causing problems
I recently had to reinstall windows XP home, service Pack 1, 2, and 3. I can't access updates on the microsoft site. After the screen that shows that he is control of my computer and then taking me to the 2 choices for the updates - I usually choose recommended but regardless because green lights scroll in an infinite loop and I never move forward. I used the program microsoft Fix that always finds a problem then it looks more problems which it said it fixed. I think it is "down" for me. After a more thorough review of the details, I read that the update files were not where they should have been. Sometimes at startup, I get a message of recovery of the Windows registry, which reads "one of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or other copy. Recovery succeeded. I have problems with IE8 and Firefox browser have to close unexpectedly, but I hope it's because I need these updates. I'm not terribly techno warned, so if anyone can offer some advice thanks to use the KISS method - keep it Simple Sweetheart. Thank you.
