verification of the file system and the disk check

I always thought I knew.
But I'll have more in addition to the doubts and uncertainties.

When is to perform the verification of the file system?
When is to perform the disk check?

Hello

SFC/scannow - run when you suspect that there may be a file system corruption as it will check the digital
Signatures. Of course, SFC will attempt to overwrite any file that is not signed correctly. For many errors

CheckDisk (chkdsk) should be run every time you think that hard drive corruption as possible which could be

SFC is executed at any time, especially if there was any found errors.

    0rignal title: Vista SP1 didn't update problem

So, recently, I was on my computer of gf and noticed she had some updates, it could use his computer which included the SP1 update.  So I went through the process trying to update his computer and he has been a disaster and have had many problems and seems to have tried everything.  It has a Dell inspiron 1525 and has no CD and no key for its program of Vista.  I burned a Vista recovery disk and tried troubleshooting by using that, but have not had much luck.  When I use the Startup Repair tool there is no nothing.  So I tried to use the restore of the system with the Description of "install: Windows Vista Service Pack 1.  He had a restore point saved just before I tried to update to SP1.  Whenever I chose this method, it's but the whole process then in the end it says:

"System restore was not entirely successful.  File system and the setting of your computer have not changed. "

then he begins to list the details with the error code (0x80071AA7) and then gives me the option to close or 'Run System Restore"once again that is an endless loop, because I just end up with the same error each time.  If anyone has had this problem and bring myself through it.  I don't want to reinstall windows because it seems simply ridiculous and plus that she a lot of pictures on his computer and I want to get rid of those.

    Hello

Follow the steps and check if the problem persists.

    Step 1:

I suspect that your security program may be responsible for this. I would suggest you temporarily disable all security software and try the system restore.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software

Note : Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats.  In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Step 2:

As for installing updates is concerned, I you should install them after you put your computer in aclean boot State. There could be a third-party software in conflict with updates. Clean boot helps eliminate these conflicts.

Note: Restart your machine as usual by following step 7.

  • Checking system files on...- One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You can cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press a key in the second.

The Windows boot splash screen appears and then I get the above message on a BACK screen when I start my laptop.  I am running Windows 7 64 bit... it does not recognize when I try to ignore it and it freezes.  I tried hard to stop and start again without luck to get past this screen.

    Suggestion:
Let the system run the disk check. Will take some time, but let it run.
After that, read the answer below on how to stop it in current check disk at startup.

  • This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification.

I've seen other posts on this topic. Nothing seems to work, so I thought I would explain my situation.

The machine is new. Win7 64 bit company. The problem I see is that I try to load some versions of Visual Studio on the new machine. However, none of the discs auto-run using my local internal DVD drive. They all have a Readme file with the message "this disc contains a"UDF"file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346"UDF"file system specification."

I know that the discs are good, I used the on my old machine, and I can always use them on other machines I tested.

The real kicker here is that I can plug an external USB DVD drive... and then the local drive starts to read the installation discs! It's like making this action allows something else in the machine.

Also, I even restarted the machine mode of diagnosis (without external DVD drive attached)... and restart, the drive would read the installation discs. BUT when I do a full stop and then turn on the machine upward, the local drive gives me the same readme file. Again, it is as if something gets activated, and then reset to a complete stop.

I am at a loss of what to check then. Real head-scratcher, because I know the drive works and the machine can recognize the drive and even read installation discs.

I do not have the applications installed on the machine of DVD burning, so I don't think there is a conflict.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Problem with the disk check.

    32-bit Vista Home Premium:

About 6 months ago, I ran a Check Disk from my C drive (using Vista error checking tool) and checked the two boxes before starting (fix Auto file system and search for errors / attempt to recover bad sectors).

He ran through the 1 5 6 controls without finding an error.

On the 6th and final verification that it is running, it hung (or the 4th of 5 controls it works - do not remember if it is 5 or 6 it works). According to me, he started the final control, but stopped and none did not move. A few hours later he still hadn't moved, so I did a hard stop.

Fortunately, everything was fine when I rebooted.

I use the computer since then without problems/errors obvious hard drive, but I'm afraid to run another check of the disk, even though I would right now.

Suggestions are welcome as to what might have caused the shot, and if I do another check of the disk.

Yes, it's essentially the same command.  Personally, I never use the other method - I just use the one that I you provided.

: You are right about the meaning switches - you already know or you're an awfully good guesser.  Since you have expressed interest, here's more information on CHKDSK you might find of interest with other switches and guidelines and some good information on how it works and how to use the results: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-check-disk-chkdsk.html.

If you cannot complete a cHkdsk on your hard drive, then there is a problem with the player that must be resolved before it is any worse.  I would definitely give it another chance and also run the diagnostics that I recommended in a previous post.

I hope this helps and I hope that the test completes successfully this time.  If this isn't the case, I hope that the diagnostic test identifies the problem and it can be repaired than replaced (even if it's pretty rare - usually if it goes wrong it must be replaced).  If this is the case, I would as soon as possible to ensure that it is not so bad that you can no longer access the drive at all - but then again, there may be nothing wrong and we could be worrying for nothing but a bad block or two which is nothing to worry about in itself.

    Good luck!

It is not clear what you were / are doing.  Try this:

Power output during the disk check.  Now, does nothing.

I started my system, he said to check the disc. The disk check began, he had run for a while. Then my power is out for a few seconds. Once the power was back on that I tried to reboot and nothing. The monitor shows no info yet. Just black says no signal and turns off. I have no option to boot or anything else besides. What I can do. Thank you

    Hello

You did it of any material changes or software on the computer before this problem?

You can connect the monitor to a different display port or connect another monitor if possible and check if it works very well.

If the monitor is right, it implies that there is a problem with the graphics card or motherboard. In this scenario, I recommend you contact the manufacturer of your computer for help.

  • Cannot complete the disk check

Hello, please help. I'm not very comp savvy. I run Windows 7 Professional on my computer, I think that it is a 64-bit AMD chipset? My problem is that I have tried everything I can to throw the disc check start ay (NTFS?, so will not work while the drive is in use). I get a message that I have a corrupt firmware and so cannot run diskcheck. Do not know what software it may be and cannot recover until diskcheck is done... Catch 22. I tried the command prompt in elevated mode... .even without help because of NTFS! I am also told by convenience store that my ATI driver is not loaded. Tried using Windows 7 installation disc to repair, but it does not seem to have this facility... I wanted to just re - install Windows. Tried to start my chipset reinstall but was not sure which item to choose. Lost, lost, lost. Help, please?

First of all, scan SFC. The following link will help you:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

Then try running the disk check. If the problem persists, try running Seagate SeaTools from following link to scan the hard drive for errors (also works with hard drives Seagate-no):

    For Windows:

For DOS (try it if did not work under Windows):

I have a D: drive which worked well for a few years. Now I can not access the content. In Explorer, it says:

In disk management, the "Volume" and "File system" columns for this volume are empty. Right-click the product volume icon only help and not the list of other possible actions (open, Explorer etc) that has developed for other volumes. The Status column indicates "healthy (OEM partition). In the graphical display of the drive, it says 94 MB healthy, as it has always done for this volume.

All other volumes are functioning normally.

I got appreaciate any advice on how to study why this is happening.

Can post you a photo of the lower pane in the window Disk Manager disk of sky as a shared file and a link here.

You can access disk management by typing disk management in the search box above the Start button and pressing ENTER, or by selecting Start, Control Panel, administrative tools, computer management, storage, disk management.

The letter D is commonly attributed to a DVD player. DVD shows only one size when a DVD is in the drive. 94 mb would not be a size, so it might be referred to or used free disk space.

I had the same problem with CHKDSK suspended @ 1 second! But after reading several places (see the reference below links), I found a solution that worked for me in any case.

    At startup:
    • When you see the Dell Logo, press F8 repetedly = Boot mode safe
    • Advanced startup options
    • Repair your computer
    • CMD prompt
    • CHKDSK C: /F

That's how I was able to run CHKDSK. I had a problem that he was able to fix it!

    • /F fixes errors on the disk.
    • /V FAT/FAT32: displays the full path and name of every file on the disk. On NTFS: Displays the eventual cleanup messages.
    • /R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies / f).
    • L:size NTFS only: changes the size of the log file for the number specified in kilobytes. If the size is not specified, displays the current size.
    • /X force the volume to unmount it first if necessary. All open handles to the volume would then be invalid (implies / f).
    • /I NTFS only: performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
    • /C NTFS only: skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.
    • /B NTFS only: Re-evaluates bad clusters on the volume (implies / r)

  • Can I hard restart during the disk check?

I had a few friends and customers who had annoyed long check discs, which some have not read the menu and cancel the check before he started. I was wondering if do a hard reboot (holding the power button down) would cause any irreparable harm for disks being checked.

If chkdsk is run with options to fix file system errors or to investigate and fix bad sectors, and the program has found such and is be in the method of determining when the hard reset is complete, the files will be damaged. However, there is no physical damage to the disk. How that the effects of the system depends on what file (s) is/is damaged.

If chkdsk is run without parameters, the difficulty value system errors or scan file and difficulty of the sectors, audit only the disc bed and do not write on the disc. No error not desirable by putting an end to arbitrary test.

If the system goes in chkdsk on startup, which means that during the last use of the machine, before the last stop, one or more file i/o errors were detected and therefore the "dirty"indicator disc has been defined and chkdsk scheduled for the next boot. He should be able to complete, errors fixed. If it recurs, the cause must be sought.

As part of this, download the software for reader to check on the website of the manufacturer of the disk. Download the version that is burned to a CD or DVD. Do this. Boot from the CD/DVD and run the tests.
