  I have a MacBook Pro of the retina on OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 running. Previously, I could connect a previous MacBook Pro (late 2009) to an external VGA monitor.   I bought this unit, such as used on ebay. It works fine except that the external VGA connection does not work. I'm on win 7 and I it does not recognize the external display properly and I can set it up as an expanded view. However the external display shows nothing. The external VGA display is fine because it works with other machines to laptop. I tried to use UBUNTU Live CD on this machine and tried to do the work of the external screen (and it also can recongize the external display and configure it) but there is no picture. I also connected the screen external vga port and then rebooted the machine, but still no picture. I tried to change the settings in the bios for both display, but all my actions point to a hardware failure.

  I don't know if it's a manufacturing defect? Do you know if this problem has been reported earlier for you. Y at - it a recall issued for this?
  Please advise I need to connect this external screen but am sure it's a fault of equipment with your device.

  Have you tried it with the factory settings? I mean the Windows preinstalled from Toshiba with all drivers and tools. If you have the Toshiba Recovery disk you boot from that disk and install Windows with all the drivers and tools.

  my two-year old Satellite A100-847 screen has stopped working. I used the external VGA monitor for a few days,
  and then switched back to laptop computer LCD and discovered that it doesn't work. It shows nothing, only the gray backlight.
  The LCD does not work even at start-up in WIN XP, or AC or battery power. I tried to disassemble the screen according to some guide
  to check if the cable is firmly in his place in connection to the LCD, but it has not solved the problem.
  I use the original BIOS and the somewhat updated nvidia display driver, it worked fine until now, so I suggest this isn't a driver/bios problem.

  I think that it s a hardware problem of the display or the FL-inverter.
  The FL inverter is part hidden somewhere close to the screen.
  It controls the backlight of the display.

  Tried new drivers, BIOS update, change VGA settings in the bios for LCD & RGB but with no joy, does not not in Windows or in the boot.

  Unfortunately, you won't be able to connect your second vga monitor to the pc. The second video port on this motherboard is a DVI - D port. DVI - D provides only a digital signal which does not work with your analog VGA monitor.

  DVI - I to VGA adapters are available because DVI - I includes an analog signal, but also a digital signal.

  Apparently, DVI - D to VGA converters are available, but I'm not sure how that they work.

  If you want a second vga monitor on your pc, you will need to install a second vga graphics card, if you have an available housing.

  I have a Pavilion HPE h8-1114 PC, that has a DVI and HDMI monitor port. I have a VGA monitor connected to the DVI port with an adapter. I have a second VGA monitor, I want to connect, but I understand that it cannot be connected to the HDMI port. Are there other options besides buying a HDMI monitor? Can I use one of the covered ports which I think is VGA? (I guess not.) Can I add a second graphics card with a VGA port and use both screens? (I saw on another post that adding another graphics card could disable the existing card). Can I opt for a card that supports two VGA or DVI ports?

  In addition what erico said, there are other options. You can use a video-to-USB adapter of EVGA UV plus + 19 or you can add a x 1 PCIe graphics card. If with a PCIe x 1, using a card Nvidia... results will be the best in this way.

  I really hope someone is able to help and give me cheaper workaround here. I am currently using the single port thunderbolt that I have on my Mac mini to connect my VGA monitor (with mini display port to VGA). However, I would use an audio interface of stroke of lightning and therefore need to try to free this port so you can connect it.  What are my options here (other then buying a new monitor?) are there adapters that I might be able to use?
